History of Tarring Priory Bowls Club

Tarring Priory Bowls Club was founded on the 19 October 1937 at a meeting in the Old Palace, Tarring. During the Seventy-two years since that inaugural meeting Tarring Priory has continued to grow in stature and is now without doubt one of the strongest clubs in the local area. The reasons behind this success are the excellent membership spirit that exists, a diversity of players participating in Social, Club, Inter-club, County and National competitions, together with a stable and forward looking management team.
It is because of this mix of experience in our membership, backed up by qualified coaches that we are able to extend a warm welcome to bowlers of all abilities.
Tarring Priory Bowls Club operates during the outdoor season, from 25th April until the 4th October, from a six rink green situated in Church House Grounds, Tarring, which is maintained by the Local Authority to a good standard and is available seven days a week.
The Club has the advantage of its own pavilion, comprising a social room with a bar, adjacent kitchen facilities with a separate changing room.

The Pavilion at Church House Grounds (behind St Andrews Church), Tarring is the home of Tarring Priory Bowls Club throughout the outdoor season, where there is always a warm welcome for new or experienced bowlers. Qualified Instructors are on hand and Members of the Committee will be pleased to answer any queries and provide an application form for membership on request. Membership applications are usually considered at the next monthly Governing Committee meeting following receipt.
We have abolished the 'joining fee' for newly elected members who will just now pay their Annual Fee of just £15.00 p.a.(a member joining halfway through the season will pay a pro rata subscription, members joining towards the end of a season will pay nothing until the start of the following year. A match fee of £1.00 is usually payable for play in club matches or competitions to help cover equipment, administation and refreshment costs. Green fees must also be paid of either £3.80 or £5.30 according to the length of session or alternatively by season ticket costing £100.00 (£55.00 for a new bowler for the first year). All green fees are payable to Continental Landscapes Ltd., as agent for the local authority.
The club official pale blue polo shirt with or without an official pale blue sweatshirt, both of which carry the club badge, are worn for all club events. Trousers (or approved tailored shorts on most occasions) in either grey or white are worn depending on the type of play or time of day. Flat soled bowling shoes in white, brown or grey are permitted. Club Blue or White wetsuits may also be worn in inclement weather.
Members having a casual 'roll up' can now play in the any attire they choose but flat soled bowling shoes are a must.

Presidents Report - June 2009

ridley_derek_large.jpg
I am pleased to report some good news, our Landlords Worthing Borough Council are set to renew the roof of our Club Pavilion hopefully sometime during July/August. This major improvement promised for a number of years will be a welcome relief as no longer will we have to suffer the inconvenience of water drips and stains to the ceiling. We will however have to put up with the noise during the reconstruction period.

We have had a tremendous start to the season with the green in tip top condition thanks both to the weather and the attentions of Greenkeeper Steve, it seems that our machine acquisition is beginning to pay dividends. Fixtures and Competitions are well underway with some excellent results. We also received a welcome return visit from our Cawston BC friends from Norfolk.

With our membership numbers settling at the low eighties, your Governing Committee is always looking at ways to improve our Playing Membership numbers and request all our Players to do their part by introducing friends or neighbours to the Club.

Club Captains Round Up

John Fairs will bring you a regular report on how the season is progressing as soon as the season gets under way.

Competition Secretary's Report - 28th June 2009

messer_alan.jpg
Ben Haulkham has had an excellent start to his time at Tarring Priory. He has won well against Hammy Pannu and also Louis Petretta in the Championship singles. He is through to round two of the Handicap Singles and he is into the semi final of the Handicap Pairs with his partner Emilio Di Pietro. Last year’s club champion, John Fairs, fell at the first hurdle against Mick Meadows 21-19.

Most notable of the Championship Pairs games Chiffins/Rolph against Burrows and Wyatt (sub for Jon Clear). After leading 15-2 Wally was seemingly home and dry with 3 ends to go still had a seven shot lead but became marooned on 19 shots. Rolph and Chiffins made up the difference – killed an end, forced an extra end and finally won through.

Worthy of note in the Handicap Singles: Dave Robbins 21-16 v Ted Hood; Martin Joyce 21-20 v Derek Meechan; Tony Gale 21-11 v Emilio Di Pietro and finally Kevin Wortt against yours truly.

All the competition draws are available on this site and will be updated fortnightly until the end of the season. The very best of luck to everyone left in the competitions and enjoy your bowling.

Alan Messer

Club Champion 2008 - John Fairs

Pictured is our 2008 Champion John Fairs. By his own admission John was a 33/1 outsider to win the clubs premier trophy at the start of the season. After beating Barry Parris (21-4), Alan Vidler (21-16), Len Cater (21-9), Hammy Pannu (21-13) and Wally Burrows (21-15) no doubt his 'handicap' will see a big adjustment next season. John, as you said on Saturday evening 'I may never win it again BUT I've done it once and no one can take it away from me'.
Many congratulations we will all be after your scalp next season.
